Datta Aarti meaning

Stanza 1

Know that Datta is the embodiment of the three gunas and of the Trinity: Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. He is the incarnation of all three qualities and the king of the three worlds. Even the Vedas, which describe him only as "neti neti" (not this, not this), cannot grasp him by reasoning, and even gods, sages and yogis in samadhi cannot hold him in meditation.

Refrain

Victory to you, O Lord, victory to Shri Guru Datta. As I wave the aarti before you, all the worries of worldly life are taken away.

Stanza 2

Outside and within everything, you alone are Datta. How can an unfortunate person understand this truth? Even the highest speech turns back before you, so what room is left for doubt? Through you, the cycle of birth and death comes to an end.

Stanza 3

Datta came and stood before me. With pure devotion I bowed to him in full prostration. Pleased, he gave me his blessing and freed me from the round of birth and death.

Stanza 4

The meditation "Datta, Datta" took hold of me. My mind dissolved and rose beyond thought, and the feeling of "I" and "you" was sent away. Eka Janardani, that is Eknath, the disciple of Janardan Swami, is absorbed in meditation on Shri Datta.

How to perform Datta Aarti at home

  1. Clean the puja place and place a picture or idol of Lord Dattatreya facing east or north.
  2. Light a ghee diya and incense, and offer flowers, preferably white or yellow.
  3. Offer naivedya such as fruits, jaggery or sweets.
  4. Hold the aarti plate and wave it in a clockwise circle while singing all four stanzas and the refrain.
  5. After the aarti, take the warmth of the flame with both hands, touch your eyes, and bow before Lord Datta.

Benefits of singing Datta Aarti

Devotees sing Datta Aarti for the blessings of the Guru, peace of mind and freedom from worry. As the refrain says, waving the aarti removes "bhavachinta", the anxieties of worldly life. It is especially auspicious on Thursdays, on Datta Jayanti (Margashirsha Purnima) and on Guru Purnima.
