About Sri Ranganatha Ashtakam
Sri Ranganatha Ashtakam (శ్రీ రంగనాథాష్టకం) is a revered devotional hymn of eight sacred verses
(ashtakam) glorifying Lord Ranganatha, the majestic reclining form of Lord Vishnu
enshrined at the world-famous Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam, Tamil Nadu.
The temple, situated on an island between the rivers Kaveri and Kollidam, is the foremost among the
108 Divya Desams (sacred Vaishnavite pilgrimage sites) and the largest functioning Hindu temple in the world.
Each verse of this Ranganatha Stotram uses a beautiful poetic device where the Lord's
divine attributes are praised through a series of compound descriptions — His form (roopa),
His divine play (leela), His abode (nivasa), His worship (vandya),
His sovereignty (raja), His auspiciousness (bhadra), and His reclining posture
(shayi) — each culminating in the refrain "Ramataam Mano Me" meaning
"May my mind rejoice in Lord Ranganatha."
Benefits of Chanting Ranganatha Ashtakam
Fulfills all righteous desires (Sarvan Kaman Avapnoti)
Grants ultimate union with Lord Ranganatha (Rangi Sayujyam)
Brings peace of mind, removes anxiety and worldly sorrows
Bestows divine grace and protection of Lord Vishnu
Purifies the heart and accelerates spiritual progress
Especially powerful when chanted during Brahma Muhurta (early morning)
When to Chant
The phala shruti (concluding verse) recommends chanting early in the morning after rising
(Pratar utthaya yah pathet). It is also considered highly auspicious to recite during
Ekadashi vratas, Vaikuntha Ekadashi, Saturdays dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and during visits to
Vishnu temples — especially the Srirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple.
